As part of World Sight Day, which is celebrated with events and awareness-raising activities organized in cooperation with the World Health Organization and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, ophthalmologists and specialists carry out awareness and consciousness-raising activities to ensure that each individual protects their eye health.
10 WAYS TO PROTECT OUR EYES
Turkish Ophthalmology Association General President Prof. Dr. Huban Atilla stated that World Sight Day is celebrated by ophthalmologists, specialists and volunteers all over the world. Atilla shared his suggestions by saying that almost everyone in the world experiences an eye health problem throughout their lives, but more than a billion people worldwide do not have access to the services required for eye health or treatment. Everyone should apply these 10 rules to love and protect their eyes and inform those around them.
1. Follow the 20/20/20 rule.
When looking at a screen, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes to prevent eye strain and headaches.
2. Spend time outdoors.
Children should spend at least two hours a day outdoors. This helps their eyes develop healthily and prevents them from becoming myopic.
3. Wear sunglasses outside.
To prevent the sun's rays from damaging your eyes, make sure your sunglasses provide UVA and UVB protection.
4. Wear prescription glasses if necessary.
Wear your prescription glasses to see clearly and prevent eye strain and headaches.
5. Check your cosmetics to avoid eye infections.
Check the expiration date of your eye makeup products and change your brushes regularly to prevent bacterial growth that can cause eye infections.
6. Exercise regularly.
Regular exercise reduces the risk of developing conditions that can negatively affect your vision health, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
7. Eat healthy.
A balanced diet ensures you have the vitamins and minerals needed to maintain healthy eyes.
8. Do not smoke.
Smoking increases your risk of developing serious eye conditions and permanent vision loss.
9. Get an eye exam to detect problems before they occur.
An eye exam can detect eye problems before your symptoms worsen, so get examined even if you think there is nothing wrong with your eyes.
10. Prioritize your eyes, you need them throughout your life.
Put reminders in your calendar for regular eye check-ups. Have your eyes checked every 1-2 years.
