The quality and variety of foods consumed play a major role in overall brain performance, memory and mood. The mind-body connection is real, but what does that mean? So what goes into the stomach affects the brain in that direction.
Speaking to Habertürk, Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Şirin Seçkin states that one of the most effective ways to protect and develop brain health is proper nutrition.
Dr. Seçkin emphasized that Western-style nutrition can have negative effects on the brain and continued as follows: "Saturated fats consumed with sugar slow down the brain's functioning. Sugar consumed with foods such as fried potatoes, creamy cakes, and chocolate further increases this negative effect. This situation weakens brain functions in the long term, decreasing mental performance."
Dr. Seçkin reminded us once again of the critical role of proper nutrition on brain health and said, "The brain spends energy even during sleep. The brain's most basic fuel is sugar. However, it is essential to keep blood sugar balanced. It is possible to protect metabolism and brain health by regulating eating habits. Proper nutrition is very important for healthy brain development in childhood. Wrong eating habits can lead to insulin resistance. A diet rich in carbohydrates at an early age causes insulin resistance and negatively affects brain functions. Insulin resistance leads to distraction, learning difficulties and forgetfulness."
