Prof. Dr. Coşkun, citing a study conducted by Texas A&M University in the United States, stated that exposure to arsenic, even at low levels, increases the risk of cancer. Stating that arsenic levels, especially those mixed into drinking water, pose a great threat to health, Coşkun said, “Research shows that exposure to 1 to 5 parts per billion of arsenic in drinking water increases the risk of kidney cancer by 6 percent. This rate increases to 22 percent when it exceeds 5 parts per billion.”

Coşkun stated that arsenic findings were found in water systems in some states in the US, and emphasized that drinking water sources should be tested regularly. “The fact that the risk of kidney cancer increases by 4 percent with the doubling of arsenic levels in water reveals the seriousness of this threat. This situation shows once again how important drinking water safety is for public health,” he said.
