As our ancestors said, leaving the table without being full prolongs life. The scientific world, which has found the secret to longevity in hunger, lists one after another diets that restrict calories. The latest nutritional model in this area is the "Diet that Imitates Hunger..."
As a result of the peak of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and orthopedic diseases due to obesity and inactivity, which have become the biggest health problems of the century, modern nutrition science has begun to be based on “eating less”. In the studies conducted, scientists discovered that reducing calorie consumption slows down the aging process in the cell. Researchers from the Columbia University Center on Aging revealed that the rate of biological aging decreased by 2-3 percent as a result of 24 months of energy restriction.
Drawing attention to the fact that obesity is rapidly increasing in all countries, rich or poor, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Murat Baş drew attention to the fact that Turkey is also the fastest growing country in Europe and said, “Our obesity rate, which was 15 percent in 1974, is around 31-32 percent today. One in every five children is obese or overweight. These people constitute the obese people of the future.”
LIVING LONG BUT HEALTHY
While the average life expectancy from birth is increasing, the concept of “Longevity”, which means living long and healthy, has also begun to be emphasized, said Prof. Dr. Baş, “Longevity does not mean living long, but continuing an active life during long life. Life expectancy at birth has increased for both women and men. Men are expected to live around 79, women around 81-82. There are some steps in Longevity. If a person reaches the age of 65, we expect this person to live 13 more years; if a person reaches the age of 70, we expect this person to live 10-odd years. If that critical period is exceeded, the life expectancy is extended a little more medically. However, the important thing is to live without being dependent on anyone and without illness…”
EXTINGUISH THE FIRE OF METABOLISM!
Stating that the key to a healthy and long life is “eating less”, Prof. Dr. Baş said, “In our religion and culture, there is a need to leave the table hungry. Science also says to leave the table when your stomach is 80% full. Especially after the ages of 45-50, step on the brakes on eating and reduce your daily energy intake. Modern science has definitely shown the connection between overeating and obesity and cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. Overeating, in other words excessive energy intake, triggers many mechanisms that make the body sick, accelerate aging, and shorten life. Conversely, this process can be reversed by reducing the energy intake during the day.”
Prof. Dr. Murat Baş, stating that high energy consumption turns the body into a place of fire, listed the positive effects of low-energy nutrition on metabolism by consuming the right nutrients as follows:
Growth factor: Depending on the food intake, we secrete IGF-1, also known as growth factor, which is an insulin-like hormone. As we age, the secretion of this hormone should decrease. If it is still secreted in large amounts, diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer occur. When we eat less, the secretion of this hormone also decreases. Rust reaction: In the mechanism called oxidative stress, free-floating stray oxygen molecules in our body, which we call reactive oxygen species, get lost and bind to different cells and can damage the structure of those cells. These cells become unable to perform their life-sustaining functions. This accelerates aging.
Cell repair: On the other hand, with aging, damage to cells begins to increase. With the aging of these cells, there is actually a decrease in the processes that the cells need to perform. Energy restriction begins to repair this.
CELL REPAIR WITH A DIET THAT MIMICKS STARVATION
After diets such as single food diets and water diets, the medical world is trying to open the doors to a longer and healthier life with a new diet that eliminates the negative aspects of these diets... One of the diets that has been scientifically researched the most in this field is the "Starvation Mimicking Diet" developed by biogerontologist Prof. Dr. Valter Longo from the University of Southern California, who was selected as one of the "50 Most Influential People in the World" by Time magazine in 2018... Stating that the 25-year-old healthy life model developed by Prof. Longo together with his scientific team aims to activate cellular cleaning mechanisms and ignite the regeneration mechanisms in the body, Dr. Oğuz Mülazımoğlu said, "Not all hunger is the same. In this diet that mimics hunger, instead of starving with long-term diet programs, it is recommended to consume 1,100 calories on the first day, 800 calories on the remaining five days, drink 2-3 liters of water per day and walk a lot. It is done three times a year."
EATING LESS MAKES YOU 2.5 YEARS YOUNGER
Prof. Dr. Baş said that scientific studies have proven that a diet that mimics hunger reduces the development of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, increases brain health and muscle development, regulates sleep and improves mood. He added, “This diet has been the subject of more than 100 scientific studies.
