Dr. Fakih Cihat Eravcı, Associate Professor of the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, explained the healthy consumption of hot drinks and stated that hot drinks in teapots and thermoses should be drunk approximately 5 minutes after being poured into a glass or cup.
Faculty of Medicine Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases Department Faculty Member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fakih Cihat Eravcı stated that since the winter season has begun, there is a heavy consumption of hot drinks, and said, "In fact, hot drinks are consumed heavily not only in winter but in every period. In this sense, it is a very valuable issue to prevent fluid loss. We need to pay attention to this, especially in terms of health. We need to pay attention to this situation in terms of both the immune system and protection from infections, but we need to emphasize the temperature issue. We should not lose our health in something we do for our health. Recent studies and research have shown that consumption above 65 degrees can be a risk factor in our health. This risk can increase especially if we have bad habits such as smoking and alcohol. Therefore, we have to pay attention to the temperature of the drink we consume."
"IT IS BEST TO WAIT, NOT TO DRINK IT IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT HAS BEEN SPILLED"
Explaining the healthy consumption of hot drinks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eravcı said, "Hot drinks that start in our mouth, continue in the pharynx, esophagus and stomach cause problems in each of them with repeated contact. If we constantly consume hot drinks as a habit, it causes problems. In daily practice, since we cannot measure 65 degrees, when a drink is poured from a teapot or thermos into a cup, the 5-minute waiting period is enough for us to drop to 65 degrees. Instead of drinking it in a hurry after it is poured, we can use such practical information."
"THERE MAY BE A TRIGGERING SITUATION AT THE POINT OF CANCER"
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eravcı, who stated that excessively hot drinks can cause health problems over time, said, "Especially if consumed hot, repeatedly and the amount of the drink is also important. If we consume drinks such as tea and coffee a lot, these cause changes in the lining of our pharynx, esophagus and stomach. This situation creates chronic irritation.
It causes a kind of callus formation, it reduces our sensitivity. In continued consumption, this time changes towards bad cells may have started. In later times, there may be a triggering situation at the point of cancer in the esophagus, pharynx, mouth area. When it is added to the point of making tea, smoking coffee, it creates a synergistic effect. A risk factor that would normally be 2 times increases 5-6 times. There may be a further increase," he said.
"IT SHOULD BE REDUCED BELOW 50 DEGREES IN CHILDREN"
Underlining that children should be especially sensitive about hot drinks, Eravcı said, "We need to be more sensitive about hot drinks in children. Just as all their tissues and organs are sensitive, the sensitivity of the lining from the esophagus to the pharynx and mouth is greater. Since burns can occur at the point of intense hot consumption, it can cause more narrowing and transformations. Children are important to be careful about. Therefore, there is a situation called child temperature when consuming outside. It should be lowered below 50 degrees in children."
